Asta and Tekla announce new link to enhance BIM project scheduling
Asta Development and Tekla have launched a new solution which improves interoperability and enhanced information flow between Tekla Structures and Asta Powerproject software. This new development was announced at the Asta Powerproject Construction National User Forum at the British Library in London on the 23rd February, 2012 where it was received with enthusiasm by delegates from many leading construction companies.
Andrew Bellerby, Managing Director of Tekla UK and Paul Bamforth, Managing Director of Asta Development announce the new service at Asta’s BIM focused event
This bi-directional link has been developed with input from Asta and Tekla customers over several months to help ensure it is in tune with user requirements. One customer who has been testing the integration during a beta phase is William Hare. Steve Bleasby, Construction Manager for William Hare says:
“This is most certainly assisting us with the planning and co-ordination required for the type of projects we work on.
These projects inherit a considerable amount of interfaces in particular between the structural and mechanical contractors and by utilising the Construction Manager module we are clearly defining these interfaces. This is demonstrated by the use of the 4D Visual representation created by linking with Asta Power Project.”
This seamless means of data transfer between the two solutions will enable main contractors and their steel and concrete sub-contractors to more efficiently manage projects by combining data from the as-built Tekla model with comprehensive Asta Powerproject schedule information.
This new solution enables task and schedule information to be taken from Asta Powerproject into Tekla Structures to visualise and manage activity progress in the 3D model. Users will be able to more effectively manage the supply chain, identify schedule and constructability issues, obtain accurate quantities for QTO and create 4D visualisations in a highly detailed model environment. Conversely, structural information can be transferred from the Tekla model into Asta Powerproject, allowing users to create an accurate and comprehensive schedule that maintains an association with model objects, thereby facilitating collaboration between clients throughout the supply chain.
“We are delighted to be able to announce that this link with Asta Development is now available,” says Andrew Bellerby, Managing Director of Tekla UK. “This improved interoperability greatly increases the potential of both software solutions and enables our customers to deliver construction projects on time and under budget with greater control and reduced waste. The industry is becoming increasingly aware of the huge benefits associated with BIM as a process and soon it will become a requirement on many different types of projects.”
“It is clear that the momentum behind BIM is growing and at all stages of the Project Lifecycle companies are looking to see how existing processes may change and how they can effectively deliver a BIM based project” says Paul Bamforth, Managing Director of Asta Development. “It is for this reason that, whilst 4D is just one element of what will be required, I am very pleased and excited about the partnership with Tekla and the resultant link between our product offerings.”
There will be a programme of webinars and roadshows over the coming weeks to provide an opportunity to see the link in action. Anyone wanting to find out more or register interest in attending should contact:

About Asta Development
Asta Development is a leading international developer of project, portfolio and resource management software which provides solutions for managing any size and any type of project.
Since its launch in 1988, the company’s core solution suite, Asta Powerproject, has evolved and improved driven by regular feedback from users and using the latest technologies available. It has proved its capabilities over the years on high profile projects throughout the world and is now used by thousands of planners in a wide variety of industry sectors in the UK, Europe, Asia Pacific and the USA. Asta Development supports customers directly from its offices in Oxfordshire and Shropshire. Outside of the UK, Asta Development has a network of distributors who supply, train and support customers, with the software available in up to seven different languages. Asta Development is a part of Eleco plc, a holding company focusing on software and advanced off-site building systems for the construction industry. The company is listed on the London Stock Exchange’s Alternative Investment Market (AIM). More information about Asta Development and its products can be found at www.astadev.com and information about Eleco plc can be found at www.eleco.com.
With its software, Tekla drives the evolution of digital information models and thus provides more and more competitive advantage to the construction, infrastructure and energy industries. The company was established already in 1966, and today it has customers in 100 countries, offices in 15 countries, and a global partner network. Tekla became part of Trimble Group in 2011.
The highly detailed as-built structural models created, combined and distributed with Tekla BIM software enable the highest level of constructability and production control. Centralizing building information into the model allows for more collaborative and integrated project management and delivery. This translates into increased productivity and elimination of waste, thus making construction and buildings more sustainable.
Tekla helps contractors to manage the risk of unforeseen costs and loss of time especially in the project delivery phase. From design to supply and installation, all the key data needed for the project delivery can be embedded into the model. This allows proactively responding to deviations and managing the project in an intelligent, visual system. Tekla interfaces with the leading construction management and design software to provide a comprehensive information management platform.
