Canon Europe Case Study

Asta Powerproject suite helps tight resource management of Canon’s localisation projects

Canon Europe, through its specialised localisation department based in London, takes the documentation and software that support Canon’s products and turns them into localised versions for the EMEA market. A team of over 20 project managers run projects that involve localisation of software, manuals, web content, copier display and Flash content into as many as 30 languages.

The Localisation & Production (L&P) department works for many branches of the worldwide Canon organisation and each job requires localisation into numerous languages, involving word, cultural reference, icon, diagram, screen and ondevice translation. Any project can use a different permutation of internal and external resource, which can involve teams of translators, translation agencies, engineers, testers, editors and proofreaders, all adhering to strict and critical deadlines. With project managers juggling several projects simultaneously, the workload becomes not only heavy but complex. Resource allocation, monitoring and management therefore has a critical role at Canon to help ensure customer delivery deadlines are met or exceeded. Responsibility for this lies with the resource managers including Programme Manager, Peter Jones, who is accountable for completion of projects to budget and to schedule, and for maintaining the quality of the output. He explains why, over the past nine years, the L&P department has relied on Asta Development’s project, portfolio and resource management suite to help run the operation effectively.

“Asta Powerproject is easy to use, I find the software extremely flexible and the presentation capabilities are excellent”
