The
Business
Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, Michoud
Operations at NASA’s Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans,
Louisiana, builds the External Tank of the Space Shuttle, NASA’s
flagship manned space vehicle. The External Fuel Tank is the largest
part of the Space Shuttle and is jettisoned after use. A new External
Tank is needed for each shuttle launch.
The Challenge
The logistics involved
in scheduling the manufacture of the External Tank are
highly complex and subject to strict time constraints.
Lockheed Martin needed an automated system that would
help the planners assess progress, plan tasks precisely
and allocate the right resources to complete tasks on
schedule. ‘What if’ scenario planning was
another key requirement.
The

Results
The scheduling process – which used to take several weeks – can
now be completed in a few days. When challenging events occur, planners
can assess within minutes what the impact will be on the schedule. Management
now receive accurate, automatic updates on a weekly or daily basis.
